Student Stories: From Complete Beginner to Confident Sewist

The short answer: most of our students arrive as complete beginners, many nervous about even touching a sewing machine. With step-by-step guidance, they leave with finished garments they made themselves, and some go on to sew for family, sell their pieces or start small businesses.

More than 3,000 students have learned to sew with us, first in a home studio, then a rented space and now our Woodbrook studio in Port of Spain. Every one of them has a story. Here are a few.

Christine: from first stitch to her own shorts

Christine joined our Beginner Sewing Bootcamp with no sewing experience. Over three sessions she learned to thread and control the machine, cut her pattern and construct a pair of shorts she could wear.

In her own words: “The academy has a young, trendy and professional feel, with teachers who are patient, kind and very knowledgeable. The space is thoughtfully designed, relaxing and welcoming.”

Kristen-Jade: a young creator building something of her own

Kristen-Jade started in our Kids Class and Beginner Bootcamp as an absolute beginner. With every class she grew more confident and more creative, experimenting with styles and designing her own pieces.

“In my sewing journey, I have been able to successfully run a small business where I sold garments to girls in my school and have been able to achieve complex looks that I would have thought impossible just a year before.” — Kristen-Jade

Natalie: sewing as a safe space

For Natalie, sewing became more than a hobby; it became her space to slow down and rebuild her confidence. She now makes her own birthday and date night outfits and sews thoughtful pieces for the people she cares about. One proud moment: seeing a friend tagged in photos from a Carnival fete, wearing a piece Natalie made from scratch.

“A little over two years ago, I began my sewing journey with Taylor M Sewing Academy, and it has been transformative. Through their expert guidance, I’ve gained not only the technical skills for impeccable garment construction but also the confidence to bring my creative visions to life.” — Natalie

What do these stories have in common?

  • They all started as beginners. Where you start doesn’t decide where you’ll finish.
  • They finished real garments early. Wearing something you made is what builds lasting confidence.
  • They kept going. Each class built on the last, from first seams to custom pieces.

Is learning to sew right for you?

If you’ve ever thought “I’m not creative” or “I can’t sew a straight line”, you’re in good company. That’s exactly how most of our students describe themselves on day one. Read more of what students say in our Google reviews, or start with our guide on how to use a sewing machine.
